2020 Walsh & Sons ‘Burnside’ Chardonnay
Margaret River, WA
Made by two second generation winemakers in southern Margaret River. This vineyard is an old Cape Mentelle Vineyard and was planted in 1984 which is old for Margaret River.
It’s one of the closest vineyards to the ocean and it’s on a steep north facing slope so captures plenty of heat and tends to produce a powerful style of Chardonnay. The vineyard is managed bio-dynamically and because it is so steep, it can only be worked by hand – no tractors here! Add classy Burgundian oak in the mix and it’s on!
“From Ryan Walsh and Frey Hohnen, whose families have been wine farming in Margaret River For decades, this Chardonnay is refined, age worthy and just plain joyous to drink. Medium gold in hue, he aromas are heady and complex in tones of orange , grapefruit rind, salted nuts, mushroom, gunflint, honey and copper penny. The palate is viscous yet chalky, sliced through the middle by crystalline acidity and more complex, mineral driven flavours. Drink now – 2026” Wine Enthusiast – 97 Points
