2019 The Wanderer Chardonnay
Yarra Valley, Victoria
The Wanderer is made by Andrew Marks who is based at his family vineyard, Gembrook Hill, in the Upper Yarra Valley and comes from the same vineyard as our Upper Yarra Pinot Noir.
Cane pruned Penfolds clone vines. The grapes were whole bunch pressed then run into barrel with full solids the next day. Wild fermentation, left on lees without stirring until bottling. Fermentation and elevage in old french barrels. Only two barrels made a puncheon 500L and a hogshead 300L.
“The refreshing slosh of Granny Smith apples. The rush of white peaches. The nuances of oatmeal and something woody, something almost earthen, something steely too. It has vigour, verve, spice and more. It’s lengthy. It feels like a class act from the first sip. It needs another year or more but it’s very good.” 94+pts. Campbell Mattinson, WineFront
