2016 Spinifex Lola

Barossa Valley, South Australia

Winemaker: Peter Schell
Vineyard/Year: Spinifex / 2016
Being poured at: Sake

If Spinifex is not one of the most exciting Australian producers to have cropped up in the last decade then we don’t know much about wine.

It is testament to how much we respect the wines of Peter and Magali that we had been badgering them to let us handle their wines for almost as long as Spinifex has existed. In short, we rate them in the top few Australian producers and we’re obviously not the only ones.

There’s a bevy of new wave Barossan whites from this foundry in 2017 – including a varietal old vine Ugni Blanc and old vine Semillon – each shining a gripping light on the idiosyncratic, old vine parcels of the Barossan highlands and their dedicated growers. A significantly different constitution to previous years, this year’s Lola is a blend of old vine Semillon (58%), Vermentino (25%) and Clairette (17%).

Tasting notes

Wonderfully juicy with fresh stone fruits and a hint of pineapple along with a vibrant grassy, herbaceous twist that is subtle but present enough to give drive and freshness. Very, very hard to stop drinking.
