The Italio-Aussies

A curated collection from The Intrepid Wino

A selection of Australian wines made from Italian varieties.

2015 Domaine Merieau Methode Traditionelle
A family vineyard since 1886 this sparkling wine from Touraine is a blend of Chenin and Chardonnay. Fresh, floral and the perfect aperitif.

Trentham Estate Prosecco NV
Clean fresh, lovely fruits (green apple and quince), just a hint of friendly sweetness to take the edge off, very pleasant and solid drinking.

Range Life Garganega 2015
Really aromatic, very pristine and pretty, reminiscent of steely riesling, lime and florals. Very focused and fine, lovely and clean, a bit of a savoury edge on the back.

The Dagger Pinot Grigio 2017
Nice and aromatic, very pretty, good fruit, it does smack of a cooler climate, very attractive on the nose. Very light and fresh, very clean and drinkable, a bit of nice bruised apple character, dry style with some fruit and a bit of weight.

Unico Zelo Dolcetto 2017
Characteristically aromatic for the variety but juicier than you are likely to see in Italy, a hint of peppery stalky notes, varietal but unmistakably Australian. Nice and light on the palate, fruits and brightness consistent with the nose, doesn’t have the bite of some Italian examples, complete and delicious.

Fighting Gully Road Sangiovese 2016
Quite light in colour. It has sort of a brooding darker nose, red fruits but a deep earthy almost amaro character, a good example of Italian and Australian wines meeting half way. Although initially quite light on the palate, the personality kicks on halfway back, very explosive and juicy, still very fresh with good depth and a clean finish.

Vino Intrepido ‘Spanna in the Works’ Nebbiolo 2017 (Pyrenees, Victoria)
Harvested very late (April 27th), the grapes were de-stemmed and split in half, with one half being pressed after two weeks, and the other half pressed after two months. A mixture of mature barrels were used to age the wine on it’s fine lees, blending was performed in October 2017, it was returned to barrel and bottled in January 2018. Designed to be a lighter prettier expression of nebbiolo, almost reminiscent of a light and savoury pinot noir.
