It’s hard to think of Australian white wine without thinking of Chardonnay. Even though the first vines were brought here in the 1830s it wasn’t until the early 1970s that Chardonnay started to really take off in the Aussie market. Now Australian Chardonnays are renowned the world over for their elegance, complexity and balance.

We have selected 6 from winemakers at the top of their game, from vineyards across Australia. Time, we think for a little trip down Chardy Lane…

2017 Philip Shaw No.11 Chardonnay
The No.11 is pale straw colour and is bright and alluring on the nose. The palate is powerful yet elegant. It has fresh stone fruits with a distinct citrus line. Savoury layers of toasty oak and cashew nuts give this wine from Orange, NSW, depth and complexity.

2018 Nocturne SR Chardonnay
An excellent Margaret River Chardonnay this wine is super cool – pale green, with weight and phenolic grunt and a texture and length of flavour is to die for. It smells of blossom and gunfights, great acid line and verve but with fuller, richer fruit weight.

2017 Gembrook Hill Chardonnay
This stunning Yarra Valley Chardonnay is in high demand and quantities are limited.
“Everything slips into place with this restful chardonnay. Stone fruit and citrus, creamy lees and an appealing savoury/umami flavour of home-made chicken stock. Slippery, textural on the palate as it glide to a most convincing conclusion. Terrific length and line.” Jane Faulkner, The Wine Companion

2017 Shaw + Smith M3 Chardonnay
An elegant wine from the Adelaide Hills, showing restraint and the ability to age, with bright acid and a generosity of flavour. Typically it shows white flowers, citrus, and nectarine notes.

2017 Ministry Of Clouds Tasmania Chardonnay
A pure and tightly wound wine showing with muscle and intensity. A shy and somewhat restrained nose exudes white flowers, peach, nectarine characters, and subtle hints of nougat and wood spice. On the palate, a bedrock of chalky minerality supports a core of intense stone fruit, framing its lingering acidity.

2017 Fighting Gully Beechworth Chardonnay
“Has that distinctive Beechworth chardonnay flavour, pitched precisely in the midpoint between stone fruit and citrus, and the polished mouthfeel that follows.” James Halliday (Halliday Wine Companion)
